Behind the scenes at JLSR
February 20, 2017
Spring is in the air!
I don’t know about you, but I greatly enjoyed the weather this past weekend! Nothing like having warm enough weather to wear flip-flops in February! It’s the final stretch of winter and before we know it summer will be upon us so I thought it would be a good time to give you a behind the scenes look at how things are going for Jose Lake Store & Resort.
Fall and hunting season was great! Our Hall-O-Weekend had a great turn out and we so look forward to making it bigger and better next year. Rifle season proved to be busier than the 4th of July. We had no vacancy and we are almost completely booked for next year.
Winter is S-L-O-W. We expected it, but I’m hoping the first winter was the toughest. As most of you know, we reduced our hours of operation. Moving forward, we are going to play it by ear as to when we will change them back. It is anticipated to be toward the end of March or beginning of April when all of the snowbirds start migrating home and the weekenders open their cabins.
We did finally receive our full liquor license. Our selection of beer, wine, and liquor is growing and will change with the demands of the season, but just like all of our other stock, if you want something we don’t have on the shelves please ask. We always do our best to make accommodations.
After a somewhat grueling process, we have finally been approved to accept EBT! I just received the congratulatory e-mail over the weekend so now we are just waiting on the information packet in the mail. Hopefully we’ll be accepting EBT in the next couple of weeks!
For the month of January, we started a “We Love Our Locals Discount”. It ran every Wednesday and gave 10% off total purchase to all of the locals from Jose Lake, Chain Lake, and South Branch. It was such a big hit that we continued it throughout February! We really appreciate all who choose to shop with us, but our locals help us survive winter so this was our way of saying thank you.
As you may have noticed, we still do not have our gas pumps up and running as we had hoped to. Here’s the short version – it’s really no surprise, but like the majority of the property and buildings, the pumps were not well maintained and therefore require costly repairs. To be quite honest, we had to put more money into fixing up the store, house, cabins, and property than initially expected. It left us with a tough decision heading into winter not knowing what it would bring, other than a decline in business, so we made the choice to put the pump repairs on hold. We appreciate your support and patience as we work toward recouping funds for the repairs.
We’re really looking forward to an awesome year and have some fun things planned. On the calendar so far is an Easter Egg Hunt in April and our 2nd Annual Labor Day Beach Volleyball Tournament. In the planning phases are the 4th of July Fireworks (who remembers the awesome display Kevin Coulson used to put on?!), a bass tournament, and some sort of Jose Lake triathlon. Our goal is to bring new life to the Jose Lake Store & Resort and to show people how awesome our Jose Lake community is! If you have any other ideas or are interested in helping and/or volunteering your time with some of these events please let us know.
So that’s that for now. Thank you all for your continued support from myself and the rest of the JLSR family!
